About Us
Radar is an interview archive project that aims to expand the untranslatable world of Korean and Korean diaspora artists beyond the border. With its unique position as a universal and vernacular language, visual art touches upon ubiquitous sentiments of human beings in general, while embedded within are local ways of perceiving the surroundings acquired by the artist over lifetime. This particularity, often expressed in verbal or written form by the artist’s first language, is oftentimes lost in translation, if not attended by prudent choice of words and comfortable level of understanding in both cultures.
It is our desire to convey the subtle, nuanced essence of the artist’s world to the wider audience through coherently conducted Korean/English interview. With its origin in French term s’entrevoir—the act of seeing or having a glimpse of each other—, interview is the simplest, yet the most powerful tool that allows one to encounter the art. For the artist, it is the most plain, yet sincerest way of presenting oneself along with the oeuvre, transforming the abstract to the concrete.
With newly curated theme for each interview, we hope to put invigorating journey of artists on the world’s radar.
래이더는 미처 번역되지 못한 작가들의 언어를 조명하고자 하는 바람에서 시작된 인터뷰 아카이브 프로젝트다. 여기서 뜻하는 언어란 작가의 입을 통해, 혹은 손 끝에서 기록된 이야기와 이를 토대로 완성된 조형 언어 모두를 포괄한다.
국경과 문화를 초월하는 힘을 가진 시각 예술이라지만, 그 근원은 대부분 작가가 뿌리를 내리고 살아온 문화권에서 비롯한다. 이러한 지역적 특수성이 언어라는 낮은 듯 두꺼운 장벽으로 인해 국경과 문화권을 넘어 전달되는 데 어려움을 겪는 광경들을 종종 목격했다.
래이더는 인터뷰라는 지극히 평범하고도 단순한, 그러나 가장 명확한 수단을 기반으로 한국 출생, 또는 한국계 작가들을 해외의 관객에 소개하고자 하는 시도다. 그저 질문과 대답으로 이루어진 대담의 형식이지만, 꾸준함과 지속성, 나아가 리서치와 번역의 전문성이 가져 올 수 있는 차이를 믿는다. 그 차이를 통해 예술가로서의 긴 여정을 시작한 이들이 다음 발자국을 내딛는 데 힘을 실어줄 미세하지만 단단한 초석이 되었으면 한다.
